As Brighton already have a such a simple badge it seemed pointless to just draw another seagull and more fun to have a crack at a dolphin! There are enough birds on sports team crests anyway, and not enough sea mammals! The seagull has been in use since 1977 and is the most associated symbol with BHA. However, the dolphin appeared briefly (1974–75), taken from the Brighton town crest.

There's also another subtle symbolic element, for those who really know their English culture.
