Did you know the term Redneck was popularized from a 1921 multi-racial uprising of miners against coal companies and police? Eventually the miners unionized and wore red bandanas around their necks to distinguish each other.
Unfortunately over time the term redneck has become synonymous with racism and bigotry, and The South.
As a Southerner living in the North, I’ve heard a lot of first-hand stigma about The South. Most of it is warranted, and while I’ve never personally identified as a redneck, I certainty haven’t been proud to call myself a Southerner recently either.
A couple weeks ago I joined a Facebook group called Rednecks for Black Lives. I recommend you checking it out. It’s a community of rednecks and Appalachian Americans that stand for the Black Lives movement. It gives me hope seeing self-described rednecks ripping up their confederate flags and admitting they’ve been in the wrong.
Not all rednecks are bigots. Real rednecks stand up for others and fight political and social injustices.
