Heartworm Prevention Website

Heartworm is a parasite, which lives in dog’s heart and pulmonary artery. Heartworm larva (microfilaria) exist in the blood stream and travels throughout the entire body. When mosquitos bite dogs, the larva will transfer to the mosquito and then transfer to the next dog bitten. Heartworm will interfere the cardiovascular system when living in the heart, causing hypertrophy (enlargement of the heart), heart failure, and can further affect the liver, kidneys and other organ functions, leading to multi-organ failure and death. Overall, heartworm is a terrifying disease. Even if treated and all the worms are killed, once the damage to the heart has been done, there is no way for the organs to return their normal function.
