'Giovanni's Room' by James Baldwin – Cover Concept - v01

My partners book club read 'Giovanni's Room' last month, James Baldwin's classic novel, and it made me want to try out some cover concepts for this gem of a book.

For this concept I wanted to find an approach that looked like it was from another time... but not necessarily a specific time. I pulled a vintage typeface I had in my archive which brings a ton of character and an old world European feeling. I then paired it with a drawing from British artist Luke Edward Hall which helps give the cover a romantic vibe. Overall, I was really happy with the combination of elements, including the deep red background, which really ties all of the elements together in an exciting way.
