Bitcoin node as a system service

Just a quick concept: Would be cool if bitcoin nodes worked like an intelligent background service. Maybe it includes wallet functionality, or maybe that lives in a series of separate applications built on top. I surely would keep this on at all times if it’s respectful to my resources and other activity on the computer. Bitcoin nodes are hard to set up and run currently and reducing friction might make a big difference.
