2020 Books – The Last Policeman
Book No. 7 of 2020: The Last Policeman by Ben H. Winters
So I’m way behind on this one because I’ve been avoiding posting it. I read this book back in May, about a week before we all saw the heartbreaking, movement-re-energizing video of George Floyd being murdered by Derek Chauvin and three other cowards with badges. Along with many white Americans, I was reminded of my privilege. Reminded of my freedom from fear. Reminded of the injustices that my black friends, family and neighbors face daily. There is something broken in our country and specifically, within those who are supposed to protect us. Protect all. of. us.
So it feels weird to post about a detective story. But here it is. I enjoyed the book overall. It’s set in a time where an asteroid will inevitably end all life in a matter of months. It’s a story of a man searching for justice while the rest of the world has given up. So in that sense, it feels relevant enough.
Since it can’t be said enough:
Black lives matter
Black lives mattered yesterday
Black lives will matter tomorrow
Black lives would matter if an asteroid was flying towards us
