A Story of Freedom

Inspired by the Supreme Court (India) verdict on decriminalisation of homosexuality, ‘A Story of Freedom’ is a three-part art narrative expressed by symbols of the past, present and future of Freedom. The story is contained within the iconography of a soft drink - a rare consumer product that is neither a marker nor a segregator of class in society - a kind of affordable luxury enjoyed by the rich and the poor alike - traversing the arc of every-Indian.

The collection was exhibited at Museum of Goa (India) in late 2018.

Past : Struggle : Resilience
The legacy of iconic soft-drink brand Gold Spot reflects the resilience of Indian spirit much like the long and arduous struggles of our community and its people. Over 40 years of operations, despite extreme competition from foreign brands and tumultuous political scenario, it is the poster-child for resilience in a lot of ways. Its eventual discontinuation too was a result of oppression and not lack of love, still residing in the hearts of those who lived in its times.

Present : Freedom : Pride
The celebration of how far we have come and what we have achieved: Freedom to be who we are; Freedom to let our colours shine through; Freedom to blend with our fellow men; with pride.

Future : Utopia : Equality
The dream of a society where we are all equals akin to the homogeneity of milk; a state where we are all just humans and not subjected to profiling, labels, norms and discrimination. It also alludes to white being the perfect blend of the colour spectrum, safe and pure.
