Breaking Free

Illustration inspired by my privilege of experiencing the best of both cultures, thus celebrating the melding of East Asian and Western influences. The vertical composition points to ancient Chinese scroll paintings that often depicted beautiful landscapes and symbolic animals in floral settings. At a glance, you might notice this is an allusion to yin and yang from Chinese philosophy. The popular Tao symbol is composed by the two phoenixes, whose spirits run on strength, resilience, and transformation. Similarly to how the phoenix rises from the ashes of its predecessor in pursuit of new life, there is high hope for society to progress towards racial justice and equality.
