Harry Potter Black Lake Fan Art Illustration

This illustration is based on the Harry Potter series, specifically the Prisoner of Azkaban book. In the third book/movie, there is a scene where Harry rides Hagrid's hippogriff, Buckbeak, shortly after gaining its trust. In the movie, there is a scene that includes Harry and Buckbeak flying over Hogwarts' Black Lake. According to the book, the Black Lake is home to many creatures, but most notably a giant squid. Unfortunately this was excluded in the movie series, so I wanted to recreate the scene to include the infamous giant squid.

This illustration was created in Adobe Photoshop using a Wacom Tablet. I began by pulling reference images from Google and composited the parts of the images that I wanted into what I wanted my final composition to look like. Next I did a simplified sketch of the composition, followed by color blocking. I then worked from back to front adding details; beginning with the sky and ending with the giant squid. I am extremely inspired by Harry Potter concept art and wanted to try my hand at creating my own Harry Potter concept art.
