Scared Band of Thebes

Select assets from a project detailing the Sacred Band of Thebes: a troop of 150 pairs of male lovers. The Band may have been created in response to the idea that the soldiers would fight harder to protect the ones they love. Polyaenus, an ancient Macedonian author, describes the band as being "devoted to each other by mutual obligations of love".

The Sacred Band formed the elite force of the Theban army in the 4th century BCE, its presence on the battlefield ultimately ended Spartan domination.
