Gula Merah
Gula merah means "palm sugar" in Indonesian.
This is a series of traditional Indonesian cakes that uses gula merah as either their main ingredient or as an additional ingredient.
I was born in the States but moved back to Indonesia for good when I was 6 years old.
For me, these traditional cakes were one of the little pleasures I had as a kid who was going through that culture shock phase and at the time hated everything about Indonesia. Kinda like a nice simple 'Welcome to Indonesia' for me at the time.
So this illustrations is a small symbolism for me to celebrate my acceptance and appreciation of my roots. Thank you Ayah and Bunda.
(Ayah means Father, and Bunda means Mother)
Illustrated with Copic Multiliner SP 0.1 and Shinhan Watercolors.
