Minotaur & Harpy

These are the first acrylic paintings I’ve done since (I think) junior year in art school and that was so long ago I don’t even like to think about it. I basically ended up figuring it all out from scratch. Each canvas is 48x24 inches. (Oh, and you have to click the attachment to see both canvases.)

The Minotaur happened because right around the time we started talking about these paintings, I went to see the Art Institute’s recent Picasso retrospective.

The Harpy’s head is not an eagle and it is not a chicken. It is a Secretarybird which is a really interesting bird with a really unfortunate name. Also a harpy was a nice counterpoint in a mythological vein. And, btw, I DO know that a harpy is traditionally a bird with a woman's head.

And, yes, that is my cat in the mirror.

These are now on permanent display in Half Acre Beer Company’s Tap Room restrooms. That's correct, I made two big paintings specifically for display in the restrooms. If you want to see at least one of them, come drink beer until you need to pee.
