Fangs — Custom Typeface Design

Using the block-based font creation software Fonstruct, I developed this custom display typeface by expanding upon a class assignment. What started as an upper-case only experiment is now complete with a full character set. The personality of the typeface is lighthearted and very cognizant of its inspiration; the little “fangs” on the bottom terminals of certain characters lend a certain charm to the face and enliven its color on the page or screen. On the other hand, its stark, angular geometry keeps it from feeling old-fashioned. One could imagine that this typeface is the child resulting from the marriage of 1970’s pulp horror and 2000’s gritty sci-fi lettering styles.
