Gestalt Compositions using Black Squares

Tension (left) conveys this emotion through the use of one big black square cornering a small one in the left, bottom corner. The smaller square is contained within the boundaries to enhance the tense feeling.

Playfulness (right) conveys this emotion through the use of what seems like one white square, when in reality this composition was created using four black squares, placed so that the negative space would create the image of one white square, playfully balancing on a tilted axis. The size of the white square is significant, as it creates balance between the amount of white and black in the piece.
