COVID-19 Home Test Kit Prototype

Problem:
During the COVID-19 pandemic, getting tested has been a difficult, stressful (and sometimes impossible) process for those who need to be tested.

This made me wonder:
• What would it look like if testing was easy?
• What if we had an abundant number of tests, and everyone with symptoms was able to get tested?
• How could people get tested without the risk of infecting others?

Possible Solution:
An at home testing kit would be ideal, since those who are sick are already uncomfortable and don’t want to drive somewhere to get tested and wait in long lines. This iOS app prototype walks you through the entire process of ordering a test kit, how to collect your sample, and receiving results, all in the app.

1. Order the test
Answer a few screener questions and enter your name and address. The test kit will be delivered to your door the next day.

2. Collect your sample
Once the test is delivered, register your kit using the QR code. Collect a throat sample using a cotton swab and secure it in the tube. Ship it using the included prepaid overnight shipping envelope and track it on the way to, and inside, the lab.

3. Get Results
Receive in app test results within a couple of days.

Other ideas to explore:

Telehealth integration
This app could be integrated with your physicians Telehealth software. In order to receive a test kit, your physician would have to order it for you. You will receive a code and app download link in an email from your physician. Once the kit is delivered, you’ll be able to register your test, view instructions on how to collect a sample, and track your test until it reaches the lab. The results will automatically show in the app and be shared with your physician so they can decide on the right treatment plan for you.

In this variation, since the app integrates with your physicians software, you won’t need to fill out screener questions, or fill out your name and address. The test kit would already be ordered and on its way, making it an even simpler process.

Possible issues to consider:

• COVID-19 at home test kits are not approved by the FDA at this time
• Errors in collecting samples could lead to inaccurate results or false negatives
• If demand for tests becomes too high, and ordering is easy, it could lead to a shortage of tests
• What about those who are asymptomatic?

What do you think? Do you think this could work? I'd love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions!

*This is just a prototype for making testing for COVID-19 easier and safer, and what that process could look like. Grey boxes are placeholders for illustrations showing how to’s, different states, etc.
