Ah yes. The Squirrel Cage. This, my friends, is a Milwaukee dive bar gem. If you’re lucky enough to locate it, you’ll also be lucky to find it open. They tend to hold “loose hours”. In other words, when Pat (the owner) wants to open’er up, she will. If you catch a good day and the screen door is unlocked, you’ll likely be greeted by a couple old timers milking cocktails at the end of the bar. And of course, Pat, your friendly, raspy voiced barkeep. Grab a can of Miller lite (no taps here), and belly up. It won’t be long before Pat offers you a pretzel stick or some ritz crackers and cheese. And... play your cards right and she’ll reach behind the bar for a plastic jug filled with homemade “apple pie” shots. And if you’re wondering where the bar got its name... Legend has it that before they fixed the front door, there was a gap under it big enough that some bushy tailed friends would come in and out.... Nuts huh?
