Pollard Memorial Library Logo

This is the new logo for Lowell, MA's Pollard Memorial Library. We wanted to make the symbol more abstract, pitting away from the previous one which had a 3/4 view of the building. We also wanted to stay away from super basic stuff like trees, lamps, and building outlines which are pretty prevalent in most libraries.

We also wanted to bring the focus back to it being a library. The "Pollard" part had overshadowed the other type, as had the years of existence that had to be updated every year.

The new logo for the Pollard Memorial Library has its roots in the iconic windows of the building. It was built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, which is known for its use of wide-rounded arches based on true semi-circles.

Decorative windows such as those in the Pollard echo this shape, as do elements like the checkout desk, the door handles, and even the interior woodwork. See attached PDF if you're unfamiliar with the building.

To further tie the symbol to the place of a library, the semicircles have been designed in such a way to illustrate a person reading an open book.
