Arepa Emoji

Hi there, I couldn't be more excited to share that I helped design the proposal for the Arepa/flatbread emoji on the Unicode list.

Arepas are a popular type of food made of ground maize dough, formerly of South America, specifically from Venezuela and Colombia.

I'm originally from Venezuela, and I still eat arepas almost every day, so I'm thrilled that I had the opportunity to collaborate with this initiative.

Being an immigrant is a bitter and sweet feeling. You feel excited and hopeful but also like you bitrate your roof, especially if the country is not doing well. You find yourself constantly searching for how to help or contribute to your country or help the people you left behind. Often you may feel like you have lost your identity. When I saw the opportunity to design the Arepa emoji, I felt I had found my legacy. The Arepa is one if not the most important meal in my country, Venezuela. Giving access to this emoji worldwide was an opportunity to expose my culture to other nations and a way for my country's voice to be in anyone's hands.
