Making Mountains

The design process behind the 2018 trophies for the Scottish Tech Startup Awards. I studied maps and took topographic data from a specific region of hills in Clackmannanshire, Scotland (my home town, which is know as the epitome of Scotland). Inspired by the topography of the Ochil Hills, I decided the awards shouldn’t be identical. I modeled all 10 in a continuous line. When lined up together, they create a cohesive strip of hills. When separated, they each become a unique chunk of the rock. This is symbolic of the winners of each award, individually unique yet united by a shared vision of a better world. The 3D model I created here was input directly into a CNC machine, and the trophies were cut from blocks of Tulip Wood. The wood was then laser engraved with the winners names etc, and stained black, leaving an ambiguous form like something out of a sci-fi movie!
