Once and future king - Pen Tool inking test WIP

Thought I'd try out a few things before starting officially on new comic - still lots of work to go on this one.

As much as I love the Pen Tool, I'm not sure this is the right way to go for comic inking. It's taking way too long or maybe I've been spoiled by the years of Wacom use.

Any hints or tips for achieving the metal and leather shading from Dribbble's many super skilled illustrators?
