The oceans have long been the largest buffer for the dangerous emission of greenhouse gases by humanity. About a quarter of all carbon dioxide released into the atmosphere since the 1980s - from driving cars, operating factories, and extracting electricity from fossil fuels - has gone into water.
Ocean damage is accelerating and may be irreversible, fragile coral reefs around the world are a leading indicator of the decline of the ocean's ecosystem. Half of all reef systems have already been destroyed, posing a threat to a quarter of marine life.
The rising water temperature is extremely dangerous for corals. According to Berkeley Earth, the temperature of the oceans has been steadily rising since 1920. When the water in the ocean is too warm, the corals undergo a stress reaction and lose their symbiotic algae, which give them a characteristic color and comes to the so-called bleaching corals, i.e. the slow process of their death.
