Financial Literacy
I'll level with you, one of the biggest disconnects (a.k.a. friction points) in work culture can be between creative teams and financial. In the food chain financial knowledge ranks higher in the pecking order. This has fascinated and frustrated me over the years. And yep, there's nothing worse than being art directed by a F.D.
On the other hand I've worked with some really bright, talented creatives who can run a mile from money conversions. It's such a complex, loaded topic and in my own life, I've thought, does it need to be? I've wanted to get some better insights into this world and understand the impact of my spending and saving. And how I can be a whole lot savvier.
How to Own the World, by Andrew Craig, has been a starting point for this journey. You can start to see where your effort, sweat and tears might be directed more effectively. It also poses the question to ask yourself honestly, where are there areas in life that you’re just ‘waiting on’ to happen? I know for me there’s always the tension between what I can act upon, influence and stuff that can’t be controlled. I found reading this book challenges me to be less passive in areas of my life that I thought were beyond my control. I've just got knowledge gaps of financial literacy. I think what this book seriously (or scarily!) highlights is the desperate need for these kinds of tools to be passed onto teenagers. It's a subject that's never too late to learn… and the sooner you start, even better.
