Mind the context

No pretty pixels here, just a bit of the UX design.

The buttons on the Preferences dialog change state depending on whether the user touched any settings.

Also of some note is the Software Update preference. It doesn't include the "Update automatically" option, because there appears to be very few people who do not turn it off. Instead it adds an unusual option of "Remind to check for updates". More on this here.
