GarageBand v1 (defender) circa 2004

I worked on the visual interaction design and icon design for the first version of GarageBand, which was known as defender. GarageBand is a digital audio workstation (DAW) application that allows users to compose, record, and edit music. The development of the software was initiated after Apple acquired Emagic, a German-based company that had developed and sold a professional DAW application called Logic Pro.

The design process for the first version of GarageBand began by researching and analyzing the user interface and workflows of the Logic Pro software, which Emagic had developed. I had to understand the workflows of Logic Pro, and identify areas where improvements could be made to make it more consumer oriented and accessible to a wider audience.

I began by creating storyboards and mockups to explore different interface options. Aimed to make the interface as simple and familiar as possible, while also providing advanced features and tools for more advanced musicians.

I also worked hard to get icons for the software into their own family, consistent with the visual style of the software and that could easily communicate the function of each tool or feature. Taking a minimalist approach, focusing on simple shapes and colors, while also making sure that the icons assaulted people’e screens with delight.

After Steve approval, I worked closely with the development team to implement the new interface and icons in the software.

Having worked on the visual interaction design and icon design for the first version of GarageBand. I was part of the team that developed the software after Apple acquired Emagic. I worked to create a familiar interface that would delight beginning level musicians everywhere, while also providing advanced features and tools for more experienced artists.
