Kein Coster

My brother is starting a microbrewery in Michigan. “Kein” in German translates to “no” in English. When drinking beer in Germany, the server will leave coasters on the table to count how many beers you have ordered. Another meaning for the name could be that the beers are too good to put down.

I began by sketching out some compositions before handling any software. The biggest challenge was dealing with the name. Most people don’t know what the name means. I figured representing “Kein” inside of an X would represent its literal meaning while remaining compositionally sound. Because the brewery produces German beers in America, it seemed necessary to have each word in “Kein Coaster” represent individual design cultures.
