Radiolaria & Foraminifera 3D

Foraminifera are unicellular marine organisms that live inside tiny shells. Most foraminifera build calcareous shells, and some build shells from sand grains. The shell shape is incredibly diverse - like snail shells, jars, braids, or stars. In many foraminifera, the shell consists of interconnected chambers and so resembles a many-room apartment, which is inhabited by a single cell. Thinnest cell processes –pseudopodia, protruding through numerous openings in the shell wall, form outside a trapping network for collecting food particles. There are planktonic and benthicforms of Foraminifera.

Millions of years, Foraminifera shells accumulated on the sea bed, forming sedimentary rocks - limestones, of which the ancient Egyptian pyramids and also white stone churches of the Old Russia were built.

Sands on Okinawa (Japan) beaches consist of the shells of foraminifera Baculogypsina that are very similar to tiny stars.
