Shoot the Moon
Back in the 17th century, laws required the ace of spades to bear an insignia of the printing house. Card manufacturers had to pay taxes (called stamp duty). Various methods were used to show that the tax was paid, including a physical stamp on the highest card of the deck, which is, of course, the ace of spades.
Thus, the ace of spades is usually the largest and most intricate of the four suits.
